Lots of people have asked me what is a podcast when I was explaining I was launching mine.
[The Right-Brain geek podcast was called Roots for creativity podcast in the first episodes. ]
A podcast is like a radio show.
It's not hosted on a radio, but on the internet and you can easily subscribe for free via an app, on your phone or computer.
You can listen to it whenever is convenient for you.
You download episodes on your phone so you can listen to them when you are offline. It makes an excellent choice when you can't use wifi or data on the go: on the plane, stuck in traffic or abroad/places where you know your connection will be difficult.
You can also listen to it on the web...
There are podcasts about any subject
So you can learn about business, personal finances, get entertained by a comedian or get to know actors in a different way. Or getting inspired listening to me and the fabulous guests I invite on the Right-Brain Geek show.
It's a great way to enjoy content while traveling, commuting, running, working out or cooking for example. You can learn, get entertained or get to sleep (yes I know at least one podcast who claims it helps you get to sleep).
I found this lovely video done by Ira (from the Serial Podcast) and Mary.
How to listen to a podcast
If Mary can do it, you can too! enjoy.
You can listen on your computer or on your phone. There are tons of apps that let you subscribe and listen to them.

1 - Get a podcast app.
There are more and more apps to listen to podcasts now, some free, some available for a fee and they are quite often worth the extra dollars.
If you read this article from your phone, you will able to get the app in a few clicks.
- Obviously, we have Podcasts (free) from Apple. (with a great page to explain how to use the app here)
- I love Pocket Casts ($3.99)
- Overcast (free)
- Stitcher is also a solid app (free)
Android users :
you can use
2 - Once you have your app, pick a podcast or two.
In the app, there's a little loop icon so you can search for a podcast. For the most adventurous, you can as well check the featured podcasts in the app and subscribe at random. It's easy to unsubscribe if you are not convinced after a few episodes.
A few podcasts I'd recommend to start with:
- Elisabeth Gilbert Magic lessons
- the Fizzle show great to learn about marketing, entrepreneurship, self-employment while having fun. I can be found laughing on my own listening to them.
- The Dexterous diva - Work Smarter, Dream bigger, Live brighter. (no new episodes but worth a listen)
- Blow-up the Blueprint
- the Freelance lifestyle
- Little Voice, Big Business
- and mine! The Right-Brain Geek podcast
3 - Enjoy your new podcast besties!
Tell me on Twitter or in the comments below what good podcast you have discovered and would recommend to lovely creatives people like yourself.
